Minami Kobayashi (b.1989, Nagoya, Japan) is currently based in London. She holds an MFA in Painting and Drawing from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago (2018) and a BFA in Painting from Tokyo University of the Arts (2016).
Recent solo exhibitions include 'I Spell a Word to Free You' (with Adrianne Rubinstein), Et Al Gallery (San Francisco & NADA Miami, 2024); 'Place and Presence' (with Patrick Procktor), Frestonian Gallery, (London, 2023) and 'Somewhere not here', Goldfinch Gallery (Chicago, 2022). She has exhibited in group shows, amongst many others, at Tokyo Metropolitan Museum, Setouchi International Triennale, (Japan), Western Exhibitions (Chicago), Stems Gallery (Belgium), Dongdaemun Design Plaza (South Korea) and Shulamit Nazarian (Los Angeles).
In September 2024, Kobayashi’s second exhibition with Frestonian Gallery - The Song of Jujubes - coincided with the first major publication on the artist’s work (Minami Kobayashi: Paintings 2016-2024, Anomie Publishing).
In 2025 Kobayashi’s first solo show with Bel Ami opened at their Los Angeles space, and was presented at Liste, Basel.
Kobayahsi has recently been featured in Elle Japan, and Create! Magazine. Her work has recently been acquired by major collections including the Rubell Collection, Bunker / Beth Rudin de Woody Collection (USA), Nixon Collection (UK) & X Museum (China).
