Frestonian Gallery is delighted to partner with Anomie Publishing to present Summer - an exhibition surveying the work of 24 artists who rank among the most exciting and influential contemporary painters in Britain today.
From the publication of the first volume of its anthology ‘Contemporary British Painting’ in 2018 to the present day (and closely following the publication in 2024 of CBP Vol. 3), Anomie has set the benchmark in identifying and critically reviewing those British-based painters whose work has most significantly impacted both the domestic and international scene.
The exhibition’s theme is both a nod to the tradition of collective and collegiate summer shows in London’s contemporary art scene – dating back at least as far as 250 years and the formation of the Royal Academy’s summer salons – and also to an attitude of hopefulness, renewal and broad creative generosity against the backdrop of a world increasingly defined by division and the narrowing of national interests.
Far from creating an atmosphere of increased competition and protectionism, the advent of social media and the expansion of the artistic environment to a truly integrated global scene has provided a stage for artists to cross-promote, critically inform and celebrate one another’s practices. It is in this spirit of celebration and promotion of excellence in contemporary painting across a broad spectrum of generations, backgrounds and styles that Frestonian Gallery and Anomie Publishing present ‘Summer’, we hope that you will join us!
